Orchids are beautiful! Let's keep them beautiful. Here are some quick and simple orchid care tips for newcomers to follow. Don't be an orchid killer. Make sure your orchids are kept inside with day time temperatures of 70 to 90 degrees. Water every 5 to 7 days, make sure they are thoroughly watered, and avoid water on their leaves. Keep them in moderate, indirect sunlight. And fertilize one to two times per month. Most importantly, when the blooms are gone, the orchid is not dead, keep tending to them and you will enjoy more beautiful blooms in time. It's Cymbidium Season ....

Now is the time of year these beautiful, indoor and outdoor, Cymbidium Orchids are in hardy bloom. Exotic Plants is full of a wide selection of colors and varietals of this strong orchid, for you to enjoy.

If well cared for these large, grassy, stemmed orchids, are known to thrive, both inside and outside, in the greater Sacramento area. The cymbidium orchid is known to be one of the hardiest, and tolerant of many weather fluctuations, watering types, and soil/nutrient levels.

Cymbidiums are happiest in a cool house or outdoors, and need good air circulation, they love a breeze, and don’t seem to be super concerned about the soil they are in, but want water often, that drains easily. They have large bulbs that store water and often need a large pot or transplanting if they are thriving and growing quickly.

When you water your orchids you'll need to maintain a moist medium but don't want to have a soggy medium. To check this, place your finger about an inch into the orchid medium and if it is dry then you will need to water your orchid.

Fertilizer should never be used when your cymbidium orchids are blooming because this could keep your plant from flowering well. If you think your orchid needs fertilizer you can use a nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium mixture of 20-20-20.

* Place the poinsettia where it will receive good indirect sunlight in your home.

* Keep them away from large warm or cold drafts.

* Ideally poinsettias prefer daytime temperatures of 60 to 70 degrees. and don't like ANY temps below 50.

* Then check the soil daily, to make sure it is damp. Never allow them to sit in water and water when dry.

The Fiddle Leaf Fig

Our beautiful fiddle leaf fig trees seem to be a popular plant for home and office this fall. They are a lush, green, interior plant with large, waxy leaves that are available in small table top sizes to large 6' and taller trees that add beautiful, live color to larger spaces. And best of all they are easy to care for when they are kept warm and in good light. These plants prefer medium to high light, but not direct sun. Since these are tropical plants, they thrive and enjoy being warm. They are less likely to drop leaves or develop brown spots if kept warm and consistently watered, but not over watered. A good drink once a week is all they need. If you find the soil still damp or it is sitting in water, wait till next week to water. Over watering is sure to create root rot and dropping leaves. If you find your fiddle leaf fig loosing color over time make sure it is being fertilized mildly a few times a year and not in direct sun for too long, these are common causes of their bleaching out. ZZ Plants

Zamioculcas Zamiifolia - its botanical name.

We seemed to get asked everyday about this interesting interior plant. Slightly difficult to find around town, but Exotic Plants has a great connection with a grower on the coast that keeps us in good supply. These easy to care for plants are great for today’s more modern homes and offices; but also hold their own in a Tuscan container, oriental pot, or country basket.

ZZ Plants have long leafy stalks that keep their shine naturally. They vary in height from around a foot to about 3 feet tall. As far as care goes … they are easy. They like a little bit of water weekly, but like to be kept on the dry side, some people recommend watering every other week. And they handle low light conditions well; they can flourish in good light, but seem to burn in super direct sunlight. A great plant for those who forget they own houseplants or travel a lot. They are slow growers but growth speeds up when in brighter light conditions and their waxy leaves are nicely resistant to pest or insects. Interestingly enough, this plant’s origins are from East Africa, but can easily be found in Sacramento at Exotic Plants Ltd. We carry many sizes from an inexpensive 4” potted ZZ to a lush 14” potted ZZ plant. A great way to keep that vacation feeling in your home or office, is the addition of a tropical bromeliad. If you can't be there, Exotic Plants can bring a little touch of the tropics to you with brightly colored tropical Bromeliad plants. These long lasting plants with vibrant blooms are grown in many colors and are easy to care for.

They need bright light and warm indoor temperatures. Add water to the cups of the leaves once a week, and just a touch to the soil, not too much or it will cause the roots to rot. In one week, most of the water should be absorbed by the plant. If not, wait a week before watering again.

In a few months the colorful bloom will begin to die. When you're unhappy with its look, simply remove at the base of the stem with clean scissors. By this time you may already have a "pup" or new shoot growing from the mother plant. The secret to getting a new flower with color is Ethylen gas. In the wild, animals and insects live in the bromeliad cups, and their dead remains, along with decaying leaf matter, create Methane gas. In the home, we can provide this by cutting up an apple and putting a couple of pieces into the cups. Then placing a clear plastic bag over the plant to intensify the effect ... encouraging a colorful bloom. Just a quick reminder from Exotic Plants that summer heat is here! Make sure you keep your interior plants happy by checking them and watering them at least once a week. Especially an issue for homeowners who keep their air conditioning to minimum while they are at work during the day, or do not have air conditioning. If you know your home is warm, you might want to check your plants mid-week to see if a splash is needed until your next watering day. Amusing Venus Fly Traps have arrived, along with other carnivorous plants. They prey on flies and insects to add to their diet. They evolved into carnivorous plants in need of more nutrients in their soil ... they feed themselves. Venus Fly Traps need bright sunlight for a majority of the day. Like Sunday afternoons ... always check in with your plants, most plants require water weekly but some may need an incredibly small amount or no water at all, in the darkness of winter. So ... keep the soil damp, make sure they are getting good light, hold off on feeding or repotting, and keep them away from drafts coming from windows, doors or heating vents. These can all cause dramatic changes in a plant. Specialty Paphiopedilum or "Lady Slipper" orchids have arrived at Exotic Plants in quantities. These gorgeous orchids look difficult but are one of the easiest orchids to grow indoors. They are often one of the longest blooming orchids and are available in a wide variety of colors. We have some beautiful snowy hydrangeas that just arrived! These gems make nice holiday gifts, are easy to care for over the winter, and enjoy transplanting in the spring. They can be enjoyed inside this winter, just keep moist, check weekly, make sure they have good winter light, and remove dead blooms. They really are an outside plant. So be sure to transplant in the spring, to a shady area, where the soil can be kept moist. Think about these snowy treats for a friend this holiday!

POINSETTIA CARE ....

Ok .... you came to our open house, purchased a few poinsettias and need to know how to care for them now.

Here are a few tips:
* Place the poinsettia where it will receive good indirect sunlight in your home.
* Keep them away from large warm or cold drafts.
* Ideally poinsettias prefer daytime temperatures of 60 to 70 degrees. and don't like ANY temps below 50.
* Then check the soil daily, to make sure it is damp. Never allow them to sit in water and water when dry.

And an interesting fact: Poinsettias were introduced to the United States in 1825 by our first ambassador to Mexico, Joel Poinsette.

Summer's Song

Funny how these days and months and years cycle around...but here we are, and we're preparing a new art show. Again! Last months opening with the Hohlax Trio was such a pleasure. Life as it's meant to be! If you missed their performance you can still catch them on their MySpace site, where their CD's are also for sale.

Our Show for August, Summer's Song, opens on August 8th. We'll have some of our favorite artists displaying their work...Alexis Genung, Andy Staffas, Linda Kleeman and Don Monzon, plus some surprises, as well. We're working on getting some more live music since that was so fun last month, plus refreshments from the garden. Summer's song is all about bees buzzing and lazy warm days, welcome evening breezes and late setting suns. Come spend it with us!

Father's Day Gifts at Exotic Plants

We are fortunate to have the work of a talented local artist featured in the shop this month...just in time for Father's Day! The artist, Doug Fairchild, loves the outdoors, and it shows in his paintings and photography.

The first two pictures are of artist's proofs or limited editions available in the shop during the show. This last one, Grouse Falls on the American River, is available by special order. While it can be made smaller, it was originally meant to be the size of a full wall.

Of course, we also have beautiful exotic plants if you're looking to create an indoor paradise for the Dad in your life. Come by anytime...we'll be happy to help you.

Exotic Plants' newest art show will open on April 11th and will feature acclaimed artist and interior decorator, Linda Kleeman. Also on display will be the works of John McGinley, Alexis Genung, Silvia Trujillo, Craig Burr and Don Monzon.

Today begins the new Chinese year. Based on the lunar and solar cycles, it is the longest chronological record in history. It starts with the 1st new moon after the winter solstice and ends 15 days later with the full moon.

This 15th day is also known as the Lantern Festival and is the traditional day of the...Parade... Dragons! Lanterns! Excitement! In San Francisco, the parade will be on Saturday, February 7th.

The Chinese New Year's Dinner

Here are some ideas for your Chinese New Year's feast (January 26th). The full recipes can be seen at the website, Tampa Bay Online. The author, Jaden Hair, has more yummy recipes served with a saucy style at her website, Steamy Kitchen Modern Asian.

100 Flower Blossoms

This dish is meant to wish you a blossoming and beautiful beginning in the New Year. Mom chose broccoli and cauliflower for their plentiful florets, and the carrot slices to add an important splash of vibrant color to the dish. The swirly egg white sauce is luxurious; you also can add cooked crab meat to the sauce, which is what my mom prefers. J.H.

Tea Eggs

In northern China, tea eggs symbolize golden nuggets and prosperity. The eggs are hard boiled first, then the shell is gently cracked and simmered in a black tea-soy sauce mixture. Once you peel off the shell, a beautiful marbled design emerges on the egg. J.H.

Crispy Egg Rolls

No celebration would be complete without my mom's famous egg rolls. Stacked together, they look like gold bars and symbolize wealth. The most important thing is to make sure you get the correct wrappers. Find them at an Asian market, in the freezer section. J.H.

Stir Fried Shrimp with Ketchup Sauce

The word for shrimp in Chinese is "ha," which of course symbolizes happiness! Mom wanted to make sure that I included this dish for you because she wishes you a fabulous year full of joy and laughter. By the way, in Asian cooking, color has significance. You might think that garnish is a waste of food, however a Chinese dish must be balanced in both taste and in looks. For example, this shrimp dish is very red, and Mom asked me to serve it on a bed of crisp, green shredded lettuce because it was important to balance the vivid red with another color and texture, especially for Chinese New Year. (Eye roll ...I know, crazy Chinese, eh? J.H.

He announced that the people born in each animal's year would have some of that animal's personality. Those born in ox years tend to be painters, engineers, and architects. They are stable, fearless, obstinate, hard-working and friendly. President Obama's birthday is August 4, 1961...you guessed it, the year of the Ox!

Poinsettias

Here are some pictures of the beautiful assortment of Poinsettias in our store right now...it's amazing how many different kinds are available. Many people ask about how to keep these plants alive for future holidays. In truth it isn't easy. Native to Mexico, the Euphorbia pulcherrima grows like a weed...well, actually...is a weed. In our climate the freezes turn them to mush. It is not impossible however, for the ambitious. Poinsettias are wonderfully decorative for the holidays, and are welcomed gifts.
According to the horticultural website, Floridata, poinsettias can reach roof height if grown in the ground. Now, that would be something to see!
